The Vaccines Your Dog Needs
Vaccination is essential in preventing disease and the spread of disease in dogs. When your dog receives a vaccination, it is important to monitor him or her for any signs of allergic reaction. If you suspect your dog is having an allergic reaction, contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital to get treatment immediately.
Here are PupTown’s required vaccinations:
Rabies:
Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The vast majority of rabies cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) each year occur in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes. http://www.cdc.gov/rabies/
DHLPP:
This vaccine is actually an acronym for 5 different vaccines in one. The diseases the vaccine is guarding against are Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo, & Para influenza. Recently due to some breeds (often small dog breeds) having an allergic reaction to the Leptospirosis vaccine, veterinarians are now administering the vaccine separate from the other four. You will now see the vaccine referred to as DAP2 or DAP3 with Leptospirosis administered separately. If your dog is allergic to Leptospirosis and cannot receive the vaccination, please inform PupTown.
Bordetella:
Bordetella is a vaccine that assists with what is commonly known as kennel cough. It can be administered through the nose by a nasal spray or a shot in the fleshy part of the back. It is similar to a flu vaccine and guards against kennel cough but does not prevent it. Kennel cough is a highly contagious “doggy flu.” Often dogs at most risk are puppies and dogs with a compromised immune system. Symptoms include a hacking cough, lethargy and fever. If you suspect your dog has come into contact or has kennel cough, please contact your vet and PupTown immediately. Dogs that have kennel cough are asked to stay home to prevent further infection of other dogs.
Flea and Tick Programs: Maintaining a good flea and tick program for your pet will help prevent a flea outbreak and minimize injury or infection from ticks. If you take your dog hiking in our amazing regional park areas or the woods, your dog will likely come into contact with ticks. Ticks are known carriers of Lyme disease, and dogs are susceptible to this disease just like humans. The best prevention is having your dog on a flea and tick program and doing tick checks on yourself and your dog after enjoying your hike outside. Of course your dog will have the least exposure to ticks if you bring them to play at PupTown.
Canine Influenza (CIV): Canine influenza (CI), or dog flu, is a highly contagious viral infection affecting dogs and cats. Currently there are two strains that have been identified in the U.S., H3N8 and H3N2. It may be spread from an infectious dog to another dog through saliva, sneezing, barking or coughing, and other items such as water bowls, toys, or people spreading the virus from an infected dog to an uninfected one. The Canine Influenza Vaccine is similar to the flu vaccine in humans, it does not prevent the dog from getting Canine Influenza but with the vaccine, the dog's immune system will have a better ability to fight the virus. If your dog becomes ill, please always remember to keep them home, consult your vet and report to PupTown the illness.
