TASTY BITES?
With the recent deluge of rain, comes an abundance of mushrooms. There are varieties popping up that haven’t been seen in decades. This may be good news for mycologists and expert food foragers, but for dogs it can be very dangerous. Even mushroom varieties that are safe for us humans can be harmful to dogs. Please keep a close eye on your pup when walking, even on leash, as the fungi are showing up just about everywhere there is dirt. Before letting your dog out into the yard, do a thorough check and pull up any that may have popped up overnight– they grow extremely fast. If your dog has ingested any by accident, please call your vet immediately and save a sample of the mushroom in case it is needed.
DOGGY DINING
While in the past, California restaurants often allowed dogs to accompany their owners in outdoor dining areas, this was against the law until 2014. Thanks in part efforts by California’s “first dog” Sutter Brown ( http://gov.ca.gov/s_firstdog.php ) the state now allows dogs in restaurants under the following conditions: the dog must remain in an outdoor-dining section, be on a leash, behave, and not be in the same area where food is being prepared. This is great news for us dog lovers, but it is important to remember that business owners are under no obligation to allow dogs in their establishment. It is completely at the business’ discretion. Call ahead to a new place to make sure your dog will be welcomed.
